چکیده

Estimating Cross-Industry Cross-Country Models Using Benchmark Industry Characteristics* International industry data permits testing whether the industry-specific impact of cross-country differences in institutions or policies is consistent with economic theory. Empirical implementation requires specifying the industry characteristics that determine impact strength. Most of the literature has been using US proxies of the relevant industry characteristics. We show that using industry characteristics in a benchmark country as a proxy of the relevant industry characteristics can result in an attenuation bias or an amplification bias. We also describe circumstances allowing for an alternative approach that yields consistent estimates. As an application, we re-examine the influential conjecture that financial development facilitates the reallocation of capital from declining to expanding industries. Extending Industry Specialization and Intangibles through Cross- Border Acquisitions

This appendix contains additional analyses that we mention but do not report in the paper to preserve space.  Table IA.1: Cross-sectional gravity models (baseline equation (2)) on a sample that includes the natural resources industries.  Table IA.2: Cross-sectional gravity models (baseline equation (2)) with acquirer and target country fixed effects (instead of acquirer and target country cha...

Adjustment to Target Capital, Finance, and Growth

Does financial development result in capital being reallocated more rapidly to industries where it is most productive? We argue that if this was the case, financially developed countries should see faster growth in industries with investment opportunities due to global demand and productivity shifts. Testing this cross-industry cross-country growth implication requires proxies for (latent) glob...

Towards an explanation of cross-country asymmetries in monetary transmission

I quantify the importance of financial structure, labor market rigidities and industry mix for cross-country asymmetries in monetary transmission. To do so, I determine how closely the impulse responses to a monetary policy shock obtained from country-specific vectorautoregressive (VAR) models and a non-standard panel VAR model match. In the country-specific VAR models, the impulse responses va...

Cross-country Variation in Educational Attainment: Structural Change or Within Industry Skill Upgrading?∗

Educational attainment varies greatly across countries and within countries over time. This paper asks whether the variation in education is primarily due to industry composition or to within industry skill intensities. The main finding is that within industry variation accounts for at least two-thirds of the cross-country and the time series variation in educational attainment. The within indu...

Country and industry factors in returns: evidence from emerging markets’ stocks

This study examines the influence of country and industry factors on the cross-sectional variance and correlation structure of returns. I use new data on emerging markets’ stocks obtained from the Emerging Markets Data Base. I find that emerging markets’ returns are mainly driven by country factors, as it was shown previously in studies for mature markets, and that cross-market correlation is n...
